Shopify technical SEO case studyShopify Technical SEO: 1,000+ Errors Cleared in 4 Months
A luxury Shopify jewelry store was quietly bleeding crawl budget: hundreds of 404s from historical product retirements, duplicate collection paths, redirect chains, and 52 schema errors blocking rich results. We rebuilt the technical foundation across a four-month, three-tool audit loop and restored 20 to 25% organic sessions to priority pages.

Project overview
A luxury moissanite & iced-out jewelry brand on Shopify came to us with a familiar problem in an unusual size. Traffic was decent and sales were healthy, but Google Search Console was quietly filling with errors (404s, redirect loops, orphaned pages, broken schema) and no one internally had the bandwidth to keep up.
Three years of fast product launches, retirements, and blog-to-product linking had piled up into a genuine crawl-budget problem: Google was spending its time on 404s and duplicate collection paths instead of the priority products the brand needed to rank.
We ran a four-month engagement across a three-tool audit loop (Ahrefs, Screaming Frog, and Google Search Console), cleared over 1,000 technical issues, and restored Google’s attention to the pages that actually generated revenue.
The core challenge
A high-catalogue Shopify jewelry store with 137+ blog-to-product 404s, redirect chains up to three hops deep, duplicate collection paths from Shopify’s default routing, 52 schema errors blocking rich results, and duplicate metas across variant and paginated pages. Every fix sprint risked new debt from ongoing product launches.
What we set out to achieve
The brief was straightforward: stop the SEO investment from leaking. Every organic dollar the brand was earning was working against three years of accumulated technical debt. That set the shape of the programme.
- ✓Empty Google’s error buckets. Take GSC’s “Not Found” and “Excluded → Redirect Error” reports back to zero, sitewide.
- ✓Restore rich-result eligibility. Resolve all 52 schema errors and reinstate Product, Organization, and Review markup for price, availability, and star ratings.
- ✓Redirect Google’s crawl budget. Get Google spending its time on money pages, not dead URLs. That is the health metric that makes every future SEO investment worth more.
- ✓Stabilise the site long-term. Build an audit cadence that catches new debt from product launches before it compounds.
Our strategy
A six-part programme running on a strict three-tool audit loop over four months.
-
01
Three-tool audit loop: Ahrefs, Screaming Frog, GSC
Every issue had to appear in Ahrefs Site Audit, get validated at URL level in Screaming Frog, and get verified fixed in Google Search Console before we called it closed. The loop is boring on purpose. It’s the reason a 4-month engagement closes 1,000+ issues cleanly instead of playing whack-a-mole for a year.
-
02
Blog-to-product 404 cleanup (137+ URLs)
The biggest single finding: high-traffic blog posts were linking to discontinued product URLs. Every broken internal link got repointed to the closest live product or collection page, and discontinued products got proper 301 redirects to their nearest match rather than being left as 404s.
-
03
Redirect chain flattening and URL standardisation
Historical product renames had created redirect chains up to three hops deep. We flattened them to single hops sitewide. In parallel, we standardised internal linking to Shopify’s canonical
/products/path instead of collection-nested variants, quietly eliminating a whole class of duplicate-content signals. -
04
Schema overhaul (52 errors resolved)
All 52 schema errors resolved and the store rolled out proper Product, Organization, and Review markup. This unlocked rich-result eligibility for price, availability, and star ratings, the SERP furniture that actually moves CTR on high-consideration jewelry queries.
-
05
Meta rewrite across 500+ pages (phased rollout)
Duplicate titles and descriptions were dragging click-through across variant and paginated pages. We rewrote 108 titles and 204 meta descriptions, phased over the month so Google could recrawl and re-evaluate in waves rather than getting hit with everything at once.
-
06
Bi-weekly to monthly audit cadence
Auditing every 2 to 4 weeks meant new errors from ongoing product launches and content updates were caught before they compounded. On an active Shopify store, technical debt builds faster than most brands realise. Cadence beats intensity every time.
The results: Shopify technical SEO before and after
Headline recovery: error clearance and traffic impact
SEOSkit found things three previous audits missed. Our Search Console is finally quiet, our schema is clean, and Google is spending its crawl budget on the products we actually want to rank. The traffic lift is the visible win. The real change is that our SEO investment stopped leaking.Founder Luxury jewelry D2C brand (Shopify)
Key takeaways from this campaign
Blog-to-product link rot is the silent killer on Shopify.
Every discontinued product without a redirect is a 404 in Google’s eyes and a lost sale in yours. Make internal link auditing a publishing checklist item, not an emergency response.
One tool is never enough for technical SEO at scale.
Ahrefs, Screaming Frog, and Google Search Console each catch things the other two miss. The loop between them is where sustainable technical SEO actually lives.
Shopify’s URL architecture needs an opinionated hand.
Left to defaults, products end up living at multiple
canonical-adjacent URLs, quietly diluting authority for years.
Standardising internal links to the canonical
/products/
path is a high-leverage fix.
Schema is a revenue fix, not a hygiene fix.
Every rich result you’re not eligible for is CTR you’re leaving to competitors who did the work. Resolving schema errors is one of the fastest ways to lift click-through on high-consideration ecommerce categories.
