Building Shopify SEO From Zero: A 16-Page Collection & Schema Case Study

A new alt wine brand on Shopify had the products, the design, and the ambition, but zero SEO infrastructure. Blank meta descriptions, no schema, and duplicate FAQ blocks copy-pasted across sibling collection pages. Here’s the complete on-page rebuild, page by page.

Project overview

A new Shopify store in the alt wine niche launched with strong products across three lines (non-alcoholic, THC-infused, and functional), but every page was a blank SEO slate. No title tags targeted to keywords. No meta descriptions. No schema of any kind. And the collection pages had copy-pasted FAQ blocks that were identical between sibling pages.

Shopify presents specific SEO constraints that differ from standard CMS platforms. Collection pages, not product pages, are the primary SEO lever for e-commerce, but Shopify doesn’t natively output CollectionPage or FAQPage schema. Getting these right requires manual theme-level injection. And without a clear one-keyword-per-URL policy from the start, multiple collection pages end up competing for the same terms.

The brief was to build the complete on-page SEO foundation across all 16 pages, without rebuilding the theme, changing the URL structure, or adding new products. Everything within Shopify’s existing admin and theme.

The core problem

A new Shopify alt wine store with 16 pages, zero SEO infrastructure, and duplicate FAQ content across sibling collection pages. The Simplé Blanc and Simplé Noir collection pages had word-for-word identical FAQ blocks, a direct duplicate content signal to Google and the highest-priority fix in the audit.

What we set out to achieve

The goal was a fully optimized, cannibalization-free, schema-complete Shopify store that Google could correctly read, index, and rank from day one.

  • One keyword per page, no overlap. Build and enforce a cannibalization matrix before any copy was written. Every URL mapped to exactly one primary keyword.
  • Fix duplicate FAQ content across sibling collections. Rewrite every FAQ block to be page-specific, eliminating the duplicate content signal between Simplé Blanc, Simplé Noir, and other sibling pages.
  • Inject schema across all 16 pages via theme.liquid. Deploy CollectionPage, Product, FAQPage, BreadcrumbList, Organization, and WebSite schema, none of which Shopify provides natively.
  • Build a hub-and-spoke internal linking architecture. Replace generic anchor text with keyword-rich links and build a three-tier structure from hub page to collections to products.

Our strategy

Six implementation steps across the full 16-page Shopify build.

  1. 01

    Keyword mapping and cannibalization matrix

627 non-branded competitor keywords extracted from Ahrefs CSV exports across five competitors. Final map: 60+ keywords assigned across 16 pages, with a cannibalization matrix confirming zero primary keyword overlap between any two URLs. /collections/simple targeted “alcohol free wine” (9,000/mo). /collections/simple-blanc targeted “non alcoholic white wine” (8,000/mo). /collections/simple-noir targeted “non alcoholic red wine” (12,000/mo). Map approved before a single word of copy was written.

  2. 02

Title tags and meta descriptions across all 16 pages

All 16 pages received keyword-targeted title tags (60 characters or fewer) with the primary keyword in the first position, and meta descriptions (155 characters or fewer) including the primary keyword, a secondary keyword, and a brand differentiator. Every page previously had either a blank meta description or a default Shopify theme fallback. Google writes its own snippets for blank metas, and almost always chooses wrong.

  3. 03

Collection page copy and page-specific FAQs

Each collection page received a targeted H1, a 100 to 150 word body copy block with keyword integration, and a 4 to 6 question FAQ section written specifically for that page. The Simplé Blanc and Simplé Noir FAQ blocks were completely rewritten from scratch. Blanc covers citrus tasting notes, Chardonnay-inspired character, and food pairings. Noir covers dark cherry profile, black tea structure, and oak-inspired warmth. No shared questions, no shared answers.

  4. 04

    Schema injection via theme.liquid

Six JSON-LD schema types implemented through Shopify’s theme.liquid: Organization and WebSite (homepage), CollectionPage (six collection pages), Product with Offer including price, availability, and currency (four product pages), FAQPage (collection and hub pages with FAQ blocks), and BreadcrumbList (sitewide). All validated against Google’s Rich Results Test before submission. Schema was implemented before the site went live. New pages processed by Google with complete schema get evaluated for rich results eligibility from their first crawl.

  5. 05

    Internal linking: three-tier hub-and-spoke

A structured three-tier internal linking map: the /pages/what-is-alt-wine hub linked down to all three parent collections with keyword-rich anchor text. Each parent collection linked to its sub-collections and cross-linked to the other expression line. Sub-collections cross-linked to siblings and up to parents. Every anchor replaced generic phrases (“click here,” “shop now”) with descriptive keyword anchors (“non alcoholic white wine,” “THC infused red wine”).

  6. 06

Image alt text and file naming

Every hero image and product shot received descriptive alt text incorporating primary keywords for the page it appeared on. File names were updated before upload: simple-blanc-non-alcoholic-wine-can.jpg rather than IMG_4823.jpg. Both alt text and file names are indexing signals that most Shopify stores ignore entirely.

The results: before and after

Element Before After
Pages with keyword-targeted title tags 0 of 16 16 of 16
Pages with meta descriptions 0 of 16 16 of 16
Schema types implemented 0 6CollectionPage, Product, FAQPage, BreadcrumbList, Organization, WebSite
Duplicate FAQ blocks 2 pairs 0All rewritten page-specific
Internal links with keyword anchors 0 Full 3-tier hub-and-spoke
Pages indexed in GSC Partial 100% of priority pages
The duplicate FAQ issue was something we never would have caught ourselves. Abdullah found it in the first audit and fixed both pages within a week. The collection architecture he built gave us a clear picture of exactly which page owns which keyword. No guesswork.

Key takeaways

Optimize collection pages before product pages on Shopify.

Collection pages rank for category-level terms that drive volume. Product pages handle long-tail. Spending optimization effort on collections returns more traffic per hour than product pages in almost every Shopify store.

Duplicate FAQ blocks across sibling collections are a silent penalty.

When developers build multiple similar collection pages quickly, they copy-paste FAQ blocks. The result is identical content on multiple URLs, one of the most common and most damaging SEO mistakes on Shopify.

Shopify doesn’t output CollectionPage or FAQPage schema natively.

Manual JSON-LD injection via theme.liquid is required. This is a one-time fix with lasting impact on rankings and AI Overview eligibility. Most Shopify stores never do it.

Build the cannibalization matrix before writing copy, not after.

Retroactively fixing keyword cannibalization means re-optimizing live pages that may have already been indexed. Building the map first costs the same effort and eliminates the problem entirely.
